Francis W. Eppes

Edward Jonas was selected in a competitive bid process from among other nationally known artists to create a historically accurate life-size bronze of Francis W. Eppes (1801-1881). This life-size bronze is located at the entrance to Florida State University. Francis Eppes, the grandson of Thomas Jefferson, is the founding father of Florida State University. Francis Eppes is shown in typical attire of the 1850s. Accuracy is paramount in a historical recreation. The clothing must reflect the times and lifestyle of the subject. The facial features should agree with known images and descriptions and the expression and pose should reveal subtle facets of the personality and character.
