Sportsmanship

At a November FSU-Florida football game, the 11-foot bronze statue depicting a football player reaching out to help a fallen opponent was unveiled outside Doak Campell Stadium by Edward Jonas and patron Margaret Strum Allesee. The one and three-quarters life size monument promotes the high ideals of sportsmanship for the student/athlete. The statue’s maquette has become the central image of a national sportsmanship program promoted by the Awards and Recognition Association (ARA). This national organization of 4,000 companies in the awards and engraving industry sponsors the ARA Sportsmanship Award which is presented annually from among the NCAA Division 1 college and university football programs. The nominee may be an individual or team that exhibits good character and sportsmanship on and off the field. The selection panel includes coaches, sports and media dignitaries including Lee Corso and LaVell Edwards. This award can be seen at www.sportsmanshipaward.com.
