 Sandminers Monument

The Sandminers monument was commissioned by a foundation that was formed to honor and commemorate the sand mining industry in Port Washington. The two part bronze monument will be a tribute both to the immigrants “that built the city of New York” and to the sand that went into building it. Statues of three workmen, representing different immigrant groups: Italians, Polish and Irish that came to work the mines will stand atop the exit of a tunnel that still stands at the site.
